Led by sewerage worker and petty thief, Leopold Socha, they hide in the city’s sewers which Socha knows like the back of his hand. Initially, the sewerage worker takes money for helping the refugees, thereby exploiting their situation, However, over time, he begins to feel a genuine desire to save them and a strong bond develops between him and those in hiding. Despite the risk of death, Socha then helps the Jews selflessly.

    Zofia, a young mother, questions the sense of heroic underground resistance. However, she agrees to a request by a Jewish mother, Róża Korngld, to hide her daughter for a few days in her apartment. She refuses to accept any payment for hiding the little girl. In the meantime, an uprising breaks out in the ghetto and the girl’s true identity ceases to be a secret amongst the neighbours. Zofia then undertakes a dangerous attempt to move the girl to a convent in Chotomów.
