Zofia, a young mother, questions the sense of heroic underground resistance. However, she agrees to a request by a Jewish mother, Róża Korngld, to hide her daughter for a few days in her apartment. She refuses to accept any payment for hiding the little girl. In the meantime, an uprising breaks out in the ghetto and the girl’s true identity ceases to be a secret amongst the neighbours. Zofia then undertakes a dangerous attempt to move the girl to a convent in Chotomów.

This is a film adaption of Jerzy Andrzejewski’s novel of the same name. Irena Lilien is the pre-War girlfriend of Jan Malecki. Following their accidental meeting, he must decide whether to save the young woman. The film presents the varying attitudes of Poles towards the Holocaust and the burden of deciding whether or not to extend help. After being discovered by neighbours, Irena enters the ghetto in the midst of the uprising.

However, this decision was met with resistance from his father. Given the circumstances, his mother then admitted that he was actually a Jewish child who had been rescued from the Święciany ghetto in the Vilna region. When his biological mother gave him up as an infant, she foresaw that he would become a Catholic priest. Father Romouald Jakub Weksler-Waszkinel added his Jewish surname to his Polish one. He also wears a cross, inset with a Star of David.
