Lessons devoted to the Righteous
It contains seven scenarios of lessons for secondary schools, devoted to the stories of people honored with the title “Righteous Among the Nations”. Among them are Irena Sendler, Oskar Schindler, Chiune Sugihara, Dymitr Peszew from Bulgaria and Marion Pritchard from the Netherlands. The stories of the Righteous can be found on the website of the Center for Citizenship Education.
The materials, constructed in a modern way, present the everyday life of the Righteous, emphasize the role of personal sacrifices and decisions these people had to make in order to save their neighbors.
The scenarios presented in this study can be used during Polish or history lessons and other types of classes. They will also help scientific circles and all people carrying out educational projects.
In 2008, as a result of the cooperation of the US Embassy and the Center for Citizenship Education, materials prepared by the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous were translated into Polish.
Among them was a teacher’s textbook and a set of posters, entitled “Qualities that overcome obstacles”. The new scenarios are supposed to enrich the textbook written in 2008 and to present in a more thorough way the difficult subjects connected with the Holocaust.
The authors did their best to make the materials correspond with the Polish educational system. The scenarios should also suit various types of lessons in secondary schools.
The study “Qualities that overcome obstacles” is supposed to broaden the knowledge of people honored with the title “Righteous Among the Nations” and of the reality of the Second World War. It is an attempt to improve the methodology of teaching about the Holocaust.
The materials and additional information can be found on the website of the Center for Citizenship Education.
