Lessons about children who survived
The Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute is organizing a training for teachers, preparing them to give classes devoted to the history of children who survived the Holocaust. The training is entitled “Accounts and diaries of Jewish children in teaching about the Holocaust” and will take place on October 7th and 8th, 2010 in the Temporary Exhibitions Hall of the JHI in the “Blue Scyscraper” (2 Bankowy Square, entrance from Tłomackie Street).
The training will be based on the book “Because I wanted to survive… Jewish children in the time of the Holocaust. Educational materials” published by the Jewish Historical Institute. In this publication four scenarios of classes are presented, based on accounts of Jewish children gathered in the collection of the JHI. Apart from that, 9 full children’s accounts are included in it, written by: Mirka Bram, Jan Kulbinger, Szlama Kutnowski, Izydor Najman, Szepsel Griner, Jurek Erner, Maria Mławska, Irena Joachmisman and Estera Borensztajn. The book “Because I wanted to survive…” is an announcement of a bigger publication, in which over 50 accounts of children who survived the Holocaust will be included. Each participant of the training will receive a copy of the book.
The stories of Jewish children are among numerous illustrations presenting Polish-Jewish relations during the Second World War. In the face of the Holocaust, the Jewish community in Poland had to seek help on the so called “Aryan side”. Children were particularly helpless. Some of them got help and support from people, who have afterwards been honored with the title of the Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem.
