120th Birthday of Henryk Sławik
A special Mass was held in Jastrzębie-Zdroj, Sławik’s birthplace, followed by the unveiling of a plaque dedicated to this Righteous Among the Nations. Among those take part in the ceremony was Hungarian Consul Adrienne Körmendy.
The Śląsk Province has declared this as the Year of Henryk Sławik. A conference took place, in the Provincial Speaker’s office, to discuss the commemorative events which had taken place thus far and to present plans for future events over the coming months.
Among the most important events to have already taken place were, a nationwide forum of teachers with the participation of József Antall’s granddaughter Klara Hejj, commemorating Henryk Sławik during the proceedings of City Councils in Katowice, Rybnik and Rydułtów, history and art competitions, academic conferences and seminars, concerts and remembrances during Poland-Hungary Days in Katowice.
Conference participants also outlined plans of events which will take place over the forthcoming months - Jastrzębie-Szeroka will stage a Remembrance Run on 23rd August in which dozens of runners will tackle a 462 km course, in this way paying tribute to Sławik’s memory. The final leg of the run will end at the Mathausen-Gusen camp on the 70th anniversary of Sławik’sdeath. A ceremony will take place on 6th November during a session of the Śląsk Provincial Parliament while, two days later, the Śląsk Philharmonic will stage a concert featuring Polish, Hungarian and Jewish music. The Year of Henryk Sławik is under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland
