Take a Walk Through the Warsaw Zoo in the Footsteps of the Righteous
Participants will hear a fascinating story from the World War II period. Antonina Żabińska and her husband Jan, for many years Director of the Warsaw Zoo, helped many Warsaw Jews to hide within the Zoo grounds as well as in their own villa. During the walk, wartime events at the Zoo will be presented, along with profiles of the Żabiński family and the people whom they hid (among others, Magdalena Gross, Rachela Auerbach).
The walk will take place this Sunday, 24th June 2012 and will be led by Aleksandra Karkowska.
Participants should meet at 11:00am, at St.Florian’s Cathedral in Praga.
On the previous day, Saturday 23rd June 2012, there will be a walk through Warszaw’s Nalewki district – where “every Jewish street in Warsaw was a separate city” [I.B. Singer]. Through a Muranów lens, we will examine the history of Warsaw’s Jews who, from the city’s beginnings, took part in its development. According to the walk’s leader, Paulina Sobieszuk, we will learn of a fascinating world which has gone, along with its first-hand witnesses.
Participants should meet, at 6:00pm at the Jewish Historical Institute (at the main entrance).
These walks are an excellent method to learn of the history of Polish Jews as well as the history of pre-War Warsaw.
Participation in the walks is free of charge. Walks will be conducted in Polish.
