Elementary School No.19 in Kielce has been named after the Polish Righteous Among the Nation, Irena Sendler. Among those who took part in the naming ceremony, which took place on Friday 23rd November 2012, was Irena Sendler’s daughter, Janina Zgrzembska.

A plaque, devoted to Sendler, was unveiled in the presence of members of the City Council, representatives of educational institutions, parents and students. School Principal, Dorota Mędrak, stressed that Irena Sendler was a brave, tolerant and exceptional woman and should stand as an example for pupils to emulate.

Irena Sendler saved many Jewish children from the Holocaust. The guest of honour at the school celebrations, Janina Zgrzembska, emphasised that it was also appropriate to remember those who worked together with her mother in the rescue process.

Following the official part of the proceedings, school students presented a performance about Irena Sendler which had been scripted by school graduate, Weronika Glimos.

Elementary School No.19 in Kielce is the twenty second school to carry the name of Irena Sendler.
