Polish President Posthumously Appoints Jan Karski as Brigadier General
During the recent Independence Day celebrations, Polish President Andrzej Duda appointed individuals to the rank of General and presented state honours in recognition of distinguished service to the state and to society. Lieutenant Jan Karski was posthumously promoted to Brigadier General. Karski, a Righteous Among the Nations and legendary courier of the Polish Government-in-Exile, was the first to inform the Allies of the extermination of the Jews.
Jan Karski was born in Łódż on 24th June 1914 as Jan Romuald Kozielewski. He graduated in law at the Jan Kazimierz University in Lwów. In 1939, he began work at the Ministry of External Affairs. He participated in the September campaign as an officer in the 5th Division Horseback Artillery in stationed in Oświęcim. Following the USSR's attack on Poland, he found himself a prisoner of the Soviets. He was released after posing as an ordinary soldier. In 1939, he reached Warsaw and became active in the underground.
