In the Podkarpacki Province, 2014 Will be Dedicated to the Ulma Family

, 16 November 2016
In accordance with a resolution passed by the Provincial Parliament, 2014 will be designated as the Year of the Ulma Family in the region. Next year marks the 70th anniversary of the tragic deaths of the Ulma family who were murdered by the Germans for helping Jews.

The resolution stated, "The initiative behind declaring 2014 at the Year of the Ulma Family in the Podkarpacki Province (...), without doubt, will emphasize the family’s connection to the Podkarpacki Province and will promote an awareness of this noble family as a positive model of behaviour in difficult times in our history as was the German occupation”. The vote was unanimous amongst all 31 councillors.

In Markowa, on 24th March 1944, Wiktoria and Józef Ulma, and their six children, were murdered by German police for hiding Jews. All eight members of the Jewish Szall and Goldman families were also murdered. In 1995, the Ulm couple were honoured as Righteous Among the Nations. The town of Markowa honoured their memory, on 24th March 2004, with a Holy Mass and the unveiling of a plaque. The town has also commenced the building of the Ulma Family Museum of Poles Who Saved Jews. The Museum is planned to open in 2015.
