New Permanent Eagle Pharmacy (Apteka pod Orłem) Exhibition Opens
The exhibition within the Pharmacy commemorates the extermination of Kraków’s Jews and the figure of Tadeusz Pankiewicz, a Righteous Among the Nations. The opening the new exhibition will be a focal point of the commemorations (16th & 17th March) of the 70th anniversary of the liquidation of the Kraków ghetto.
During the War, the pharmacy was located on the site of the museum today It was the only pharmacy with the Kraków ghetto. Its owner was a Pole, Tadeusz Pankiewicz. The underground operated from these premises. The chemist was the contact point and provided aid to Jews. In 1983, Pankiewicz was decorated with honoured as a Righteous Among the Nations in recognition of his support of the residents of the ghetto. Since then, the pharmacy has served as a museum devoted to the history of this place.
Over the past two years, the pharmacy has undergone renovations and today looks just as it did during the time of the ghetto. The facade of the building has been restored, and its interior was been reconstructed using photographs Tadeusz Pankiewicz’s own albums.
The exhibition begins with the history of both the building and the people who worked within it. The second room is the dispensary. The third room is Pankiewicz’s private quarters. Here, visitors are presented with the most tragic moment of the ghetto’s history – its liquidation. The fourth room is the former pharmacy’s storeroom which is adjacent to the backyard. The last room, the former laboratory, portrays the process of restoring the memory about the history of this place.
