The monument to Henryk Sławik and József Antall in Katowice

Sławik and Antall saved about 5,000 Jews during WWII. This Saturday, the presidents of Poland and Hungary will unveil the monument honouring their lives.

Henryk Sławik, a veteran of the Silesian Uprisings and an active member of the Polish Socialist Party, fled to Hungary after Polish army had been defeated in September 1939. There, he met József Antall, who worked at the Hungarian Ministry of Interior. Thanks to Antall's help, Sławik was able to establish the Citizen's Committee for Polish Refugees in Hungary.

Apart from providing material aid for the refugees, Henryk Sławik and some of his coworkers were engaged in numerous underground activities. Sławik made special efforts to protect Polish Jews.Thanks to his close cooperation with Antall, several thousands of Jews from Poland were given fake identity documents with Slavic-sounding names and surnames.
