“Life in a Jar” – a meeting with author Jacek Mayer
“Life in a Jar – Those Rescued by Irena Sendler” is the amazing story of American teenagers whose lives were changed by the story of Irena Sendler. Each of the girls had had a painful period her life and each, in her own way, linked her own problems to Irena’s story, who knocked on doors in the Warsaw ghetto, as she said herself, “trying to convince mothers to give up their children”. The teenagers’ determination succeeded in “rescuing the rescuer”, reminding the world of her courage, hope and determination, as well as being elevated to the rank of “hero” in the world – a national hero in Poland.
May 5th marks the fifth anniversary of the passing of Irena Sendler, a Righteous Among the Nations, who helped to save thousands of Jewish children from the Holocaust.
Those who will take part in the meeting include Jack Mayer, the book’s author, Elżbieta Ficowska, one of those rescued by Irena Sendler, a pivotal character in the book and a friend of Irena Sendler’s over many years.
