Celebrations of the Day of the Social Worker
On November 16th, 2010 at 10:00 am in the Main Hall of the Apollo Cinema in Poznań were held the celebrations of the Day of the Social Worker.
Distinguished social workers and representatives of institutions of the Wielkopolskie province that initiated this year’s most interesting solutions in public assistance and welfare work received distinctions and awards.
Apart from that, a conference was held, entitled “Knowledge Changes the Future – Social Work on the Web”. The conference was opened by Krystyna Poślednia, member of the Board of the Wielkopolskie Province.
This event is part of the project “Developing Qualifications of Help and Social Integration in Wielkopolska”, co-financed from the funds of the European Social Fund.
Another part of the meeting in Poznań was the screening of a film about Irena Sendler, a Polish social worker honored by the Yad Vashem Institute with the title of the “Righteous Among the Nations” for saving Jews during the Second World War.
Irena Sendler, Righteous Among the Nations, activist of the underground Council to Aid Jews “Żegota”, working in the Welfare Assistance Department of the Warsaw Administration, saved 2,500 children during the Second World War.
The children she helped rescue were brought out from the Warsaw ghetto onto the so-called Aryan Side. They received false papers and were placed in Polish orders, orphanages and families.
Irena Sendler was honored with the title of the Righteous Among the Nations in 1965. In 2007 the Righteous was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. She passed away on May 12, 2008 in Warsaw, at the age of 98.
