Burial of Jerzy Wunsche in Israel
Born in Warsaw, after the war he emigrated to England and Monaco, Wunsche said in his will that he wished to be buried under the olive tree he had planted in the Yad Vashem garden.
He was hiding fugitives from the ghetto in an apartment he rented for that purpose. “He was a virtuous man,” said his son, Jan. “He believed that his actions were simply normal. He said everyone should act like that.”
Two of the rescued took part in the ceremony. Miriam Sherman, only a child during the war, remained under the care of Wunsche for three years after the war ended. Yosef Atlasowicz and the Yad Vashem arranged for the plot at the Kiryat Shaul cemetery, in the area assigned for the Righteous. Burial in the museum grounds was impossible.
The Polish family participated in the double funeral: the remains of Jerzy Wunsche’s wife Zofia were buried alongside him.
