„On both sides of the wall” and the “A film unfinished”
The Atlantic Cinema and the Polish Scientific Publishers PWN are organizing the meeting „On both sides of the wall”, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Warsaw Ghetto.
This event will be held on November 9th, 2010 at 6:00 pm at the Atlantic Cinema. The discussion will be moderated by Artur Wolski, and the special guest of the event will be Władysław Bartoszewski, Righteous Among the Nations, former prisoner of Auschwitz, member of the Home Army and of the Council to Aid Jews “Żegota”, Polish politician and diplomat.
During the meeting, Jacek Braciak will read excerpts of the book „I była dzielnica żydowska w Warszawie” (“And There was the Jewish District in Warsaw”) by Władysław Bartoszewski and Marek Edelman. The bookcontains, among others, the record of a conversation that took place between Bartoszewski and Edelman in April 1960, during a walk in area where the Warsaw Ghetto was once located.
It also comprises the account “Getto walczy” (“The Ghetto is Fighting”) by Marek Edelman, and the publication of Władysław Bartoszewski “Żydzi Warszawy 1939-1943” (“Jews of Warsaw 1939-1943”), describing the creation of ghettos, everyday life in the Warsaw Ghetto and an account of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, together with numerous details and documents.
The work “And There was the Jewish District in Warsaw”is a personal account of events presented to the reader from two different perspectives: of a fighter from the Ghetto and of an observer from the other side of the wall, engaged in providing help for the Jews.
This event will also include the special screening of the film “A film unfinished” directed by Yael Hersonski.
Yael Hersonski focused on a Nazi propaganda film from May 1942, portraying the life of the Warsaw Ghetto in a way in which the Nazis wanted to present it. The film from the forties shaped the ideas about the ghetto for a long time, even though it was a production of the propaganda of the Third Rheich.
The work “A film unfinished” constitutes an attempt to return to this production and to offer its critical analysis. The film was screened as part of this year’s main competition at the Planete Doc Review festival in Warsaw.
