A New Polish Postage Stamp in the “Poles Saving Jews” Series – the Kurpiel Family
“I don’t remember the exact date, but it was in May 1944. At around three in the morning, uniformed German soldiers came and surrounded the entire estate. We were woken up by banging on the door. Dad opened it and went out onto the porch with mum”, recalled Maria Tkaczyk, daughter of Stanisław and Franciszka Kurpiel.

During the German occupation, Stanisław and Franciszka Kurpiel lived, with their six children, on the Leoncin farm near Krasiczyn. From 1942, they helped around thirty Jews.
On 21st May 1944, about twenty Ukrainian policeman surrounded the Kurpiels’ buildings. Stanisław and Franciszka, together with their their oldest children, were taken to the Gestapo prison in Przemyśl. Two weeks later, the children were released and allowed to return home. On 19th June 1944, Stanisław and Franciszka were shot at the fort in Lipowica.
