KJ, 16 November 2016
With the International Day of Remembrance of Victims of the Holocaust approaching, the United Nations, this week, is organising a range of events, commemorating individuals who saved Jews from the Holocaust. Two exhibitions, with the theme of rescue, will be presented in the UN’s New York headquarters.

Under the title of Rescue During Holocaust: the Courage to Care, in several dozen venues around the world, the UN this week is arranging over 70 events focussed on the International Day of Remembrance of Victims of the Holocaust, which falls on 27th January. Among th events are exhibitions, film screenings, discussions and debates. The week’s events will end on Friday with a ceremony in remembrance of Holocaust victims. During the event, selected stories of rescue will be presented, among them the story of the Polish Righteous, Irena Sendler, who saved many Jewish children.

From today, through the next month, both exhibitions can be viewed in the lobby of the UN’s New York’s headquarters. The first of them, Jan Karski - a Man of Freedom, was prepared by the Museum of the History of Poland and portrays the biography of this famous emissary of the Polish Government-in-Exile. Jan Karski was the first to tell world governments about the extermination of the Jews. The exhibition, in its Polish language version, has until now been displayed in Warsaw, Łódż and Wrocław. Dit can also be viewed here.

The second exhibition, Whoever Saves a Single Life… Rescuers of Jews During the Holocaust, was prepared by the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous, which financially supports Righteous around the world. The exhibition covers the theme of rescue from various perspectives. It includes rescuers motivated by religious reasons, rescues by diplomats, camp inmates and youth. Several Polish Righteous are included with the exhibition, including Irena Sendler, as well as Jerzy Bieleckiwho, dressed as an SS officer, led his sweetheart out of the Auschwitz camp.
