The Righteous Helena Jaworska passed away
Helena Jaworska was awarded with the title of the Righteous Among the Nations on September 12th, 1993. During the Nazi occupation she helped – together with her family – Mendel Zeifert and his daughter Rózia, his sister-in-law Frania Zeifert and her son Lusiek. The Jews were hiding in the farm of the Jaworski family in the village Mielniczne, located in the prewar Lwowskie province. They arrived there in the summer of 1942.
At first the family of Helena Jaworska was hiding the Zeiferts in their attic. In autumn, when the frosts arrived, they prepared for them a hiding place in a hole in their barn, below the cows. Afterwards, the Jews moved to the attic, located above the so-called chamber. The farm of the Jaworski family also served as hiding place to the local Jewish partisans. Mendel, Frania, Rózia and Lusiek were the only members of the Zeifert family from Turka who survived the Nazi occupation.
After the war the Jaworski family moved and settled near Wrocław. Helena Jaworska had been living in this city for over twenty five years.
The portrait of the Righteous will be presented at the exhibition “Inhabitants of Wrocław we want to remember”, that will take place on Tuesday, June 8th, 2010 at 6 pm in the House of Edith Stein at 38 Nowowiejska Street in Wrocław.
