Righteous Exhibition hits the road with The Museum on Wheels

Mateusz Szczepaniak, 16 November 2016
The Museum on Wheels hits the road again. This is a modern mobile exposition combined with an extensive educational program. On this year’s journey The Museum has set out with our exhibition “They risked their lives – Poles who saved Jews during the Holocaust”.

The central point of the pavilion is an interactive map of each city visited by The Museum on Wheels. The map describes important places connected with the local Jewish history. Through a three-dimensional model of a shtetl we present the most important places of a typical Polish-Jewish town. We also talk about Yiddish, Hebrew and Polish, the three coexisting and intertwining languages used by Polish Jews.

Restoring the local history is underlined by the fact that each visit of the Museum on Wheels is prepared in cooperation with local leaders and activists who devote their time and resources to take care of the memory of Polish Jews.

The project was launched in 2014 and during its second edition, the Museum will be displayed in 22 cities. The touring of the exhibition and participation in activities carried out by the activity leaders are free of charge.

The Exhibition “They Risked Their Lives...” tells the stories of the Righteous Among the Nations - Poles who risked their lives, and the lives of their families, to help Jews facing persecution. The Exhibition shows the fates of the rescuers and those who were rescued in the historical context of occupied Poland, describing the extent and circumstances under which aid was provided. It highlights what motivated the Righteous to do what they did.

The Exhibition was produced in 2013 by the POLIN Museum  in partnership with the Foreign Affairs Ministry. Since then, it has had more than a dozen showings abroad – in Paris, Madrid, Moscow, Vilnius, Tallin, Düsseldorf and Havana. It has been translated into five languages – English, Spanish, German , Russian and Lithuanian.
