The Righteous Eugeniusz Guzek Passes Away

Mateusz Szczepaniak, 16 November 2016
With great sorrow, we advise that, on 28th November 2015, Eugeniusz Guzek ("Grabowski") passed way. He was a Righteous Among the Nations, an Honorary Citizen of Israel, awarded the Virtuti Militari and a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Polish Army. The funeral ceremony took place on Friday 4th December at the Bródnowski Cemetery in Warsaw.

Eugeniusz Guzek was an active individual. Before the War, he was involved in the scouting movement and, during the War, he was a member of the underground. As a Home Army soldier, he participated in the Warsaw Uprising as part of the "Baszta" Regiment. During the occupation, when asked by a scouting friend to hide a Jewish family, he agreed to help them.

The Guzek family - Eugeniusz, his mother Zuzanna, his father Józef and his sister Jadwiga – took in the Mackiewicz, Szor, Leszcz and Rajbenbach families. Risking their own lives, they shared, with them, their small home on ul. Nowogrodzkiej in Warsaw. With great difficulty, they obtained food. From 1943 until August 1944, the Guzek family hid a total of twelve people. Sadly, eight of them did not survive the Holocaust.

After the War, Eugeniusz Guzek became a construction engineer. He was Chief Engineer at the Warsaw Construction Directorate, where he oversaw the building of many apartment blocks and schools. In 1987, together with his parents, he was honoured with the title of Righteous Among the Nations.
