A REUNION AFTER SEVENTY YEARS

, 16 November 2016
An emotional reunion took place recently in New York - Leon Gersten rescued from the Holocaust by the Półzięciów family, met the son of his saviours, Czesław. The men had not seen each other for seventy years.

Two weeks earlier, the Israeli Yad Vashem Institute had posthumously honoured Maria and Stanisław Półzięciów with the title of Righteous Among the Nations.

During the years 1942-1944, in a Podkarpacie Province village, the Płózięciów family hid five Jews who had escaped from the Frysztak ghetto. It was the Gersten family among whom was, the now 79 year old, Leon. After the War, the Gersten family immigrated to the USA.

Leon greeted Czesław, Maria's and Stanisław’s son, at the airport in New York. Later, at a meeting organised by the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous, Czesław and Leon, arm in arm, told the gathering of guests about that dramatic wartime period and the story of how the Gersten family was saved.
