Prof. Wiechno’s Righteous Certificate and Medal Added to the Collection of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews
Valuable mementos of Professor Wojciech Wiechno have been added to the collection of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews – namely, the medal and certificate honouring him as a Righteous Among the Nations. The professor was awarded the title in 1985 in recognition of the help he extended to the Jews of Warsaw during the War. His daughter, Olga Johann, a Warsaw City Councillor, made the presentation to the Museum.
Wojciech Wiechno was an orthopaedic specialist who, during the War, worked at St.Roch’s Hospital in Warsaw. He aided Jews, escapees from the Warsaw ghetto, admitting them into his hospital as patients. Jews would stay there for a few days or even a little longer, until such time as a refuge could be found for them on the Aryan side. Dr Wiechno continued this activity up until the hospital was evacuated to Pszczelin following the Warsaw Uprising.
