PETITION TO ESTABLISH THE “DAY OF THE RIGHTEOUS”

, 16 November 2016
The Righteous are and always will be a symbol of humanity and dignity in the face of the biggest crisis of the European civilization. Our duty is to honour their sacrifice on the highest, national level – wrote the representatives of the Jan Karski Association of the Children of the Holocaust and the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in a letter directed to President Bronisław Komorowski.

Among people who filed a petition to establish a Day of the Righteous Among the Nations in Poland in the Polish Sejm were: Anna Drabik, President of the Management Board of the Association of the Children of the Holocaust in Poland, Bogdan Białek, President of the Jan Karski Association and Agnieszka Rudzińska, Acting Director of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews. The Day is proposed to be celebrated on 27 September, which marks the anniversary of the creation of the Provisional Committee to Aid Jews (in 1942), which was later transformed into the “Żygota” Council to Aid Jews.

The Righteous are everyday heroes; they serve as an important example of ordinary people who proved that  fear or indifference do not have to be an obstacle in fighting evil and defending human dignity. It is essential to remember the actions of those silent heroes in order to fill in the blanks of the narrative of courage and moral choices of Poles during the war –the authors of the letter underlined when addressing the President.
