More Righteous Honoured in Kraków
Five Poles have been posthumously honoured with the title of “Righteous Among the Nations”. Their descendants accepted the Medals during a ceremony which took place on Sunday 8th July at the Kraków City Historical Museum.
The Medals were presented by the Israeli Ambassador, Zvi Rav-Nera and, in some instances, by the family of those rescued.
Among those honoured were sisters, Eleonora Haslinger andi Wanda Oesterreicher, who, in occupied Kraków, saved a Jewish boy, Józef Sroka. Also honoured was Wanda Hornik-Kulczyńska who, for three years in Będzin, hid Gerda Miriam Cohen and her mother Emma.
Karolina Maciąg was also honoured. The Yad Vashem Institute recognised her as Righteous due to evidence given by Mordechaj Przeworski, whom she had saved. The fifth person to be honoured was Franciszka Zając from Kraków. During World War II, she had helped at least a dozen or so Jewish escapees from the ghetto.
