The March of Remembrance Dedicated to the Little Smuggler

Krzysztof Bielawski, 16 November 2016
On Wednesday, 22 July 2015, the March of Remembrance will once again run through the streets of Warsaw.  This year, the March will be dedicated to the children who smuggled food to the Ghetto.

The March takes place on the anniversary of the beginning of the liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto by Germans in result of which about 300,000 of its residents were murdered in Treblinka.

The March is a symbolic sign of remembering all the victims of the Holocaust. This year, the organizers intend to draw particular attention to the fate of Jewish children smuggling food to the Ghetto.

They are often spoken of as “the youngest heroes of the Ghetto” although they were different heroes than activists of the underground movement or insurgents fighting with weapons in their hands. Their weapons were smartness, ingeniousness and courage, and their victory was to outsmart the guards watching the walls and to smuggle a carrot, a potato or a loaf of bread to the Ghetto. Living in permanent fear, the little smugglers risked their lives daily transferring food to the Ghetto which allowed not only them but also their parents to survive the subsequent day.

Henryka Łazowertówna dedicated her poem titled “The Little Smuggler” to these childish heroes.

We will meet on 22 July, at 6.00 p. m., at the Umschlagplatz Monument, and from there, via: Stawki, Jana Pawła II, Miła, Smocza, Nowolipie, Żelazna and Sienna Streets, we will march to the fragment of the Ghetto wall on Sienna Street.

The March is organized by the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute. The partners are various institutions and organizations, among others, POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews.
