Julian Kornhauser Honoured With Jan Karski Eagle Award
The laureate will be commended for “literary struggles for a wiser Poland” and for “accomplishments in the areas of poetry, literature and ideas which are excellent proofs of the fact that the transformation of the Polish reality would not be possible without intellectual inspiration and reflection, serving to build the self-consciousness of the individual human being and of the entire society. Prof. Julian Kornhauser has provided this inspiration to his compatriots for 45 years.”
Julian Kornhauser was born in 1946, the son of a Holocaust survivor. He writes poetry and prose, and is a literary critic, an essayist, a co-founder of the literary group “Teraz” (Now). He is also a translator of Serbian and Croatian literature. His literary output includes hundreds of publications, among others, academic monographs and volumes of critical literary sketches. He is professionally connected with the Jagiellonian University and the Polish Academy of Sciences. During the communist period, he was active within the democracy opposition.
Several years ago, Julian Kornhauser reduced his activities and his participation in public life due to health reasons.
In recent weeks, Julian Kornhauser’s name, as father-in-law of Andrzej Duda, Polish President-elect, has become commonly known, even among these Poles who have never previously been interested in him or in his creative works.
