Irena Sendler Award
Irena Sendler was a courageous member of the “Żegota” organisation who saved the lives of over 2,500 Jewish children during the war. The Irena Sendler Award commemorates its namesake and promotes values and attitudes that she represented. Each year, the award is given to one Polish and one American teacher. It is funded by the American Goldrich Family Foundation in California and supported by Mrs. Metuka Benjamin, the Director of Education at Stephen S. Wise Temple, Milken Community High School in Los Angeles.
The award is given to those who teach and educate pupils in the atmosphere of tolerance and respect for others. They inspire pupils to act in accordance with those values. They are also active teachers in their schools and actively work and organise educational projects in their local communities.
This year, the Irena Sendler Award “For Making the World Better” will be given out for the third time. In the first edition, the winners were chosen by Irena Sendler herself. They were: Norman Conard from Union Town, Texas, and Robert Szuchta, history teacher from Ignacy Witkiewicz LXIV High School in Warsaw. This year's winners will be selected by committees established in Poland and the USA.
