An international committee for a monument honouring Polish rescuers
Last Tuesday, Zygmunt Rolat, a member of the Council of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw, was conferred the Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland by the Polish President Zbigniew Komorowski for involvement in furthering the Polish-Jewish dialogue. At the ceremony, Rolat talked about plans to set up an international committee for the construction of a monument named ‘Ratującym – Ocaleni’ (To the Rescuers from the Survivors) in order to express gratitude towards Poles who saved the lives of Jews during the Holocaust.
The committee will be composed of Rolat, former Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Adam Daniel Rotfeld, Konstanty Gebert, a feature writer, and others. Rolat reckons that the square by the Museum of the History of Polish Jews would be the best location for the monument. The philanthropist hopes that the project will be finalised before next autumn. The President Bronisław Komorowski assured that he would help to bring it to fulfillment.
