Inhabitants of Wrocław we want to remember
On Tuesday, June 8th, 2010 at 6 pm in the House of Edith Stein at 38 Nowowiejska Street in Wrocław took place the opening of the exhibition “Inhabitants of Wrocław we want to remember”.
This exhibition, held under the honorary patronage of Prof. Władysław Bartoszewski and the mayor of Wrocław, Rafał Dutkiewicz, will be devoted to the Righteous Among the Nations connected with Wrocław and to other heroes that selflessly rescued Jews during the Second World War but for different reasons have not been honored with the Righteous title.
The exhibition presents the history of the Jaworski family, Werner Krumme, Elfriede Wagenknecht and Jarosław and Izydor Wołosiański.
The exhibition will be presented until July 30th, 2010 (Monday-Friday, 10 am-6 pm). It was created as part of the EU program “Europe for Citizens” and is the effect of the cooperation of the Edith Stein Society, the Museum of the History of Polish Jews program “Polish Righteous – Recalling Forgotten History” and the project “Place of Memory – Silent Heroes” of the Foundation Place of Memory of the German Resistance Movement in Berlin.
The exposition is part of the “Indifference Hurts” project, a continuation of the five-year work of the team of the Edith Stein Society and the UNESCO Initiatives Centre with the accounts of the Righteous Among the Nations. Its goal is to show how the values and conducts represented by the Righteous are still relevant and universal today. The exhibition was opened by Paulina Poznańska, coordinator of the “Indifference Hurts” project from the Edith Stein Society and Wiktoria Miller, trainer in this project, working in the Educational Center of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews. A speech was delivered by Anna Piłko, daughter of the Righteous Mr and Mrs Wołosiański – their story was presented in the exhibition
As part of the “Indifference Hurts” project, an international team of educators has prepared four teaching scenarios based on the stories of the Righteous both from prewar and post-war Wrocław. The stories were chosen so that the international character of the city could be shown. On June 8th about 20 teachers and educators from Wrocław and its surroundings, Krakow and Warsaw took part in a training: the scenarios were presented, as well as methods of using them for educational purposes. The second free training will take place – also in the House of Edith Stein in Wrocław – on June 10th, from 9 am to 3 pm.
