Following the Righteous in Warsaw
The walks following the footsteps of the Righteous have been taking place since 2010. Their goal is to spread knowledge about the Polish Righteous Among the Nations and to remind people the stories of the places connected with their lives. Last year’s trip around the Żoliborz district met with favorable reactions: I’d like to thank you for our walk right away (…). I’m really glad I had the opportunity to participate in this event. You’re really doing great work:) I’ll be following your next projects.
During this year’s walk around the Śródmieście district, participants will get to know the stories of the Żak and Jętkiewicz families, who had been hiding Jews during the Nazi occupation, near the Grzybowski Square and the Twarda and Sienna Streets. The Żaks gave shelter to 14 people and Henryk and Janina Jętkiewicz hid two escapees from the Kraków ghetto. We are inviting everyone interested in taking part in the event to meet us on May 21st, 2011 at noon in front of the All Saints’ Church on the Grzybowski Square in Warsaw.
The walk around the Praga district will commemorate Antonina Żabińska and her husband Jan, who was the director of the Warsaw zoo during the Second World War. The Żabińskis helped many Jews, whom they had been hiding in the villa they were living in and in the pheasant area of the zoo. The walk starts on June 4th, 2011 at noon in front of the entrance to the
Prague Park, near the “ZOO” inscription.
The walk will be conducted by Daria Boniecka-Stępień. The routes are based on the accounts and documents collected during the research of the project “Polish Righteous – Recalling Forgotten History”.
The interviews with the Righteous, rescuers and rescued were edited and published on the website www.sprawiedliwi.org.pl thanks to the financial support of the European Commission.
