Contests on Henryk Sławik Announced in the Śląsk Province

The Katowice office of the IPN has announced competitions for posters and films dedicated to Henryk Sławik. During World War II, this Górny Śląsk journalist and activist saved around 5,000 Jews in Hungary and helped tens of thousands of Polish refugees.

Entry to the competition, entitled "Henryk Sławik – a Hero to Three Nations", is open to all post-primary students in the Śląsk Province. In accordance with a resolution of the Śląsk provincial parliament, 2014 has been designated the “Year of Henryk Sławik” in the Śląsk region.

The aim of the competitions is to encourage students to take on interest in the figure of Henryk Sławik, taking into specific account his activities during World War II.

Entries will close on 30th April. According to the rules, each entrant can submit a 90 seconf film or, in the case of the posters, can submit a maximum of three entries. A panel of judges will determine the winners..

2014 is the 120th anniversary of the birth and the 70th anniversary of the death of Henryk Sławik. Provincial councillors, who resolved to declare this the Year of Henryk Sławik, stressed that he was a hero to three nations – the Poles, the Hungarians and the Jews.
