Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising on Saturday
On Thursday, the 17th of April, 2014, at 10 a.m., a memorial ceremony, organised by the Nissenbaum Foundation and the Polish Ministry of National Defence, will take place at the Monument of Common Martyrdom of Jews and Poles in Warsaw at 12 Gibalskiego Street. During the ceremony, in which soldiers of the Polish Army will participate, floral wreaths and prayers will be offered in tribute to those who perished.
The anniversary ceremonies are also co-sponsored by the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, the Cultural & Social Society of Jews in Poland, and the Association of Jewish Combatants and Victims of the Second World War. At 5 p.m., the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, located at 6 Anielewicza Street, will host Rubert Kuwalek, a Holocaust researcher, who will deliver a public talk. At 5:30, Tomasz Miedzinski of the Association of Jewish Combatants and Victims of the Second World War will award the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Medal. At 6:45 p.m, there will be a concert in memory of Holocaust victims featuring flutist Anatol Kogan, pianist Konstanty Wilenski and others. The concert is free of charge, but advance booking of entrance tickets is required (tel. 22 620 05 54).
On Saturday, the 19th of April, at 12 noon, floral wreaths will be placed at the Monument of the Warsaw Ghetto Heroes, the Monument to Zegota, the mass grave of ZOB members on Mila Street, the former Umschlagplatz, the memorial plaque in honour of Pawel Frenkiel at Muranowska Street and the former ghetto wall at 55 Sienna Street. Also on that day, volunteers will be distributing paper daffodils commemorating the heroes of the 1943 uprising in Warsaw, Krakow, Lodz, Szczecin, Wyszkow and other cities. The daffodils stand for remembrance, respect and hope. Daffodils were the flowers that Marek Edelman, the last leader of the Jewish Combat Organisation (ZOB), received from an anonymous person and placed at the Monument of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising on each anniversary.
