Agneszka Holland's "In Darkness" in Cinemas

In Darkness, a long-awaited movie by Agnieszka Holland, appears in Polish cinemas on January 5. It depicts a dramatic story of a group of Jews hiding in sewers in Lviv, Ukraine, and Leopold Socha who help them survive.

The main protagonist is of an ambiguous nature, as he is both a loving family man and petty thief, on the one hand naively religious and on the other, an immoral trickster – your usual, average man, sometimes good, other times bad. But the situation he is faced with is unusual. In the course of this story, Socha’s humanity develops. His transformation is neither simple nor sentimental. And maybe that’s why we find it so fascinating, why we willingly go down that road with him.

A screenplay, by David F. Shamoon, was based on Robert Marshall's book In the Sewers of Lvov. Robert Więckiewicz acted the role of Leopold Socha, a sewage worker and Kinga Preis performed the role of Wanda, Socha's wife.

In Darknees has received international film festivals' awards, among them the Golden Frog at Plus Camerimage Festival and an audience award at St. Louis Film Festival. The film is Poland's Oscar candidate.

The greatest and most exciting challenge for me as a filmmaker has been all that is dark and obscure. They live in darkness, filth, damp and isolation for over a year. We knew that in order to show this, we would have to examine this underground world in a special way, one that was real, human and intimate. We wanted the audience to really feel with all their senses that they are there with them.
