The 66th anniversary of the murder of the Ulma family and the Jews they were hiding
The 66th anniversary of the murder committed by the Germans on the eight Jews from Szall and Goldman families, Józef Ulma and his pregnant wife Wiktoria was commemorated in Markowa near Łańcut (Podkarpackie Province). The Germans killed the Ulmas six children too; the oldest daughter was 8 at that time. Mateusz Szpytma, a historian from the National Institute of Remembrance, gave a speech about the tragic events that took place on the 24th of March 1944.
After the speech candles were lit and flowers left on the grave and the monument of the Ulma family. Wreaths were laid, among others, by the representatives of the Chancellery of the President and the local authorities. A holly mass for the intention of the Ulma family was celebrated.
The pre-realease screening of the film “ Świat Józefa” ( Joseph’s World) by Rafał Wieczyński took place in the local Community House. The film shows the remembrance of the Ulmas both among the Poles and the Jews. The film director found the children and grandchildren of the people who survived the German occupation in Markowa.
