Story of Rescue - The Szyszkowski Family

The Righteous

(Mrs. Zofia Paprocka introduces herself):

My name is Zofia Paprocka. I was born on June 13, 1931, in Jakubowice, near Lublin. At present, I live in Lublin. I graduated from Vetter High School, and then from the Agricultural Academy. I studied construction, mechanization and rural electrification. I worked as an engineer. Then I went to the USA. I spent ten years there. I have three children.

During the war, Mrs. Zofia Paprocka lived at her aunt’s, Waleria Szyszkowska, in the Ponikwoda district in Lublin. Ponikwoda was actually a village and her aunt had a farm there: she kept a cow and a pig, and also grew vegetables. She was able to sell some of her products on a market in Lublin, so their economical situation appears to have been relatively good.

The Jew who was hidden

Mrs. Zofia Paprocka recounts how for two years her relatives, Waleria and Antoni Szyszkowski, were hiding in their flat, a forty-year-old Jew named Chaim Kawa, who knew Zofia's family before the war. His family - wife and three children - were killed in the concentration camp at Majdanek.

Hiding Mr. Kawa

Zofia’s aunt introduced the hidden Jew to her as a friend whose house had been bombed so he had to stay with them.

Mr. Chaim Kawa took liking to Zofia, because she was at his children age, so he told her several times that he would like to emigrate to Israel and take her there, too.

Chaim slept in the same room with Zofia, but in the evenings the aunt would take him in a different place, to a proper hiding where he stayed sometimes, and which was located somewhere close to the stable or inside it. and the children weren’t allowed there, so Mrs. Paprocka has never seen the proper hiding.

After the war Mr. Kawa went to Israel and settled in Israel.
