During the Nazi occupation Imelda (Maria Neugebauer) served as nun of a convent of Dominican Sisters in Kolonia Wileńska, 15 kilometres from Wilno. With other sisters, she sheltered 15 members of a Jewish youth movement, including Abe Kowner, Aria Wilner, Chajka Grosman, Edek Boraks, Chum Godot, and Israel Nagel, the later activists of the resistance movement of Warsaw and Vilnius ghettos. In 1943 Germans arrested the Mother Superior (the Righteous Anna Borkowska) and closed the convent.
