In summer of 1942 Stefan’s father, Zygmunt Mikołajczyk, helped to escape from the Nazis two Jewish acquaintances of his, Jakub Jabłoński and Adela Berkowicz. They hid in the fields where Stefan brought them food. Zygmunt arranged fake documents for them and they were sent to forced labour in Germany. They survived by pretending to be Polish. In 1950 they emigrated to Israel, but kept in touch with the Mikołajczyk family.
