Coming from near Gdańsk, before the War, Gertruda Babilińska was employed by the Stołowicki of Warsaw as a babysitter for their child and as a secretary in Mr Stołowski's business.
When the War broke out, Mr.Stołowicki was in France. His wife, with their son Michał and Gertruda, trying to join her husband, only managed to reach Vilna. Here, upon learning of her husband's death, she fell ill and died. Before she died, she entrusted Gertruda with the care of her son, asking that, after the War, she take him to Palestine
Gertruda honoured the wishes of her late employer and looked after the boy who, throughout the occupation, was taken to be her son. She also helped other Jews from the Vilna ghetto.
After the War, Babilińska, with 12 year old Michał Stołowicki, left for Israel and there they remained.
