Told in retrospect, this is the true story of the Portuguese Consul in Bordeaux, Aristides de Sousa Mendes. In June 1940, moved by the fate of refugees from occupied France, he decides to disobey a ban on the issuing of visas. He provides Portuguese visas to all who come to the Consulate and, in doing so, saves tens of thousands of people, among them, around 10,000 Jews. In 1966, Aristides de Sousa Mendes was posthumously honoured with the title of Righteous Among the Nations. The music for the film was composed by Henri Seroka.

This film is from the “Sprawiedliwi” (Righteous) series. Jerzy Kożmiński and his family, together with the “Żegota” Council to Aid Jews, rescued twenty-seven Jews. Some were hidden at home, others in pre-prepared hiding-places. Sometimes, their help was provided over several weeks, sometimes over several years. “During those times, we had to hide our activities from the Germans and from the neighbours”, recalls Kożmiński. There were many days when he was terribly afraid. After the War, the Kożmińsky family was honoured with the title of Righteous Among the Nations.

Szewach Weiss’s grandparents lived in Borysław. Szewach was four-years-old when the War broke out. After escaping from the ghetto, his family found refuge with Anna Góral. Thanks to her help and the help of other Polish neighbours, the Weiss family survived the occupation. Szewach Weiss personally presented Jan Góral with the title of Righteous Among the Nations.
