TEACHERS' CONFERENCE: “GOOD PEOPLE IN TIMES OF EVIL – IRENA SENDLER – TEACHING VALUES IN SCHOOLS”
The conference is organised by a number of institutions: the U.S. Embassy, the Centre for Citizen Education Foundation, the Centre of Educational and Social Innovations in Warsaw and the Róża Luksemburg Foundation.
The conference is directed toward teachers. Its aim is to present themes connected to the Holocaust in relation to human rights and responsible citizenship. The biography of Irena Sendler will constitute a starting point for the discussion on the meaning of such values as courage, social responsibility, sacrifice, cooperation and compassion in school education.
During a plenary session, prof Stanisław Obirek and Dr hab. Barbara Weigl will give lectures. Later on, a series of workshops will be conducted by the Irena Sendler Award winners: Anna Janina Kloza (2008), Beata Maliszkiewicz (2009), Marzanna Pogorzelska (2010) and people who were given distinctions in former editions of the competition: Katarzyna Kasprzycka, Piotr Ulatowski, Małgorzata Rusiłowicz.
The Irena Sendler Award “For Making the World Better” is awarded to primary, secondary and high school teachers who teach and educate their pupils in an atmosphere of tolerance and respect for others, who inspire students to act in accordance with those values and who are exceptionally active in their schools and local communities.
