MEMOIRS OF THE CHIGIER FAMILY
The story of Leopold Socha and Jews hiding in the sewers of Lvov has already been described in several books, the most important of which were written by the very participants of those events. The Girl in the Green Sweater by Krystyna Chigier (co-authored with David Praisner) was translated into Polish and published in 2011 (the original edition was first released in 2008). The green sweater from the title was a gift from grandma; Krysia, who was 8 at the time, wore it during the 14 months that she spent living in the sewers. Today, the sweater is exhibited in the Holocaust Museum in Washington. In the book, harrowing accounts of life inside the Ghetto and hiding in inhuman conditions contrast strongly with descriptions of the happy, peaceful and hopeful times before the outbreak of the war.
In September 2011, the PWN Publishing House released the book Świat w mroku. Pamiętnik ojca dziewczynki w zielonym sweterku (World in Gloom. The Diary of the Father of the Girl in the Green Sweater). Here, the reader can follow the same story from the perspective of an adult who is forced to make dramatic decisions in order to save his family.
The Girl in the Green Sweater is also available as audiobook.
