INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY

, 16 November 2016
27 January marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. Eight years ago, the United Nations designated this day to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust.

In 2005, the General Assembly of the United Nations called on its member states to undertake actions leading to diffusing knowledge of the Holocaust lest such a tragedy happen ever again.

The main events of the Remembrance Day in Poland take place on the site of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes in Warsaw. Apart from those main ceremonies, a number of cultural events commemorating the tragedy of the Holocaust will take place throughout the country.

This year, the Museum of the History of Polish Jews takes part in the commemoration of the Remembrance Day in Łódź, where various events are organised by: the Jewish Social-Cultural Association of Poland, the Stefan Jaracz Theatre in Łódź and the Marshal's Office of Łódzkie Province.

In the Stefan Jaracz Theatre, the representatives of the Museum will take part in two events. On Monday of 28 January, at 3.30pm, Dr Tamara Sztyma from the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute will take the small stage to give a lecture titled “The Museum of the History of Polish Jews – Recalling Thousand Years of History.” On 29 January at 3.30pm, also on the small stage, Michał Majewski of the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute will present the project “The Museum of the History of Polish Jews – The Street Gallery.” The Poznański Palace will hold the Polish premiere of the “Butterflies don't fly here” exhibition, presenting a number of drawings by child prisoners of the Theresienstadt Camp, coming from the collection of the Yad Vashem Institute. The Museum of the History of Polish Jews is the exhibition's strategic partner. Admission to all three events is free.
