Yad Vashem Honors Jerzy Ponczyński
On Sunday December 11, Yad Vashem held a ceremony honoring Jerzy Ponczynski as Righteous Among the Nations. On behalf of late rescuer the medal was accepted by his children.
It was at the beginning of 1942 when Jerzy Ponczyński met Ita Zabara, whom he saved, for the first time. She jumped from the train caryring Jews to Babi Jar, a place of a mass execution, and asked a man for help.
Jerzy hid Ita in the basement, keeping her concealed from his parents. Later on he found her a hiding-place in his aunt’s house. When denouncements began to spread, Ita and Jerzy fled. They spent the remainder of the war wandering and married after liberation.
