Righteous Helena Barnik Passes Away
In Zielonka, near Warsaw, Helena Barnik and her family helped two Jewish friends – Cipora and Dora Grodzicki, who had escaped from the ghetto in Wołomin and who were then hidden in the brickworks managed by Helena’s father.
The Szymański family cared for them despite the difficult material situation and the constant danger. They not only provided them with a roof over their heads, but also with food and constant care. Thanks to their contacts with the Polish underground, Helena’s brother, Leon, obtained the so-called aryan papers for the girls, which enabled them to find work in Warsaw. However, at times of particular danger, Cypora and Dora returned to the Szymański family who always took them in with open arms. Thanks to their help, the girls survived the War.
