Jan Karski’s study in Ruda Śląska in October
The study will be created in the Youth Mining Club in Ruda Śląska-Halemba. The exhibition devoted to Karski’s activity will be presented in two rooms. It will include 57 exhibits. Touchpads will also be installed, informing visitors about the history of each exhibit. “Children don’t really like museums that is why we would like our exhibition to be interactive” – emphasizes the director of the Karski Institute, Aleksander Majcher.
Apart from that, the desk behind which Jan Karski had been working for ten years will be shipped to Silesia. Among other exhibits that will be presented in the study are: the silver Virtuti Militari order, the Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv degree, the honorary doctorate of the Warsaw University, the Polish and American flags that covered the casket of Jan Karski on the day of his funeral and the diploma “Righteous Among the Nations” awarded to him on June 7th, 1982.
A traveling exhibition devoted to the courier of the Polish Underground State is also being prepared. The Ministry of Culture has devoted 57.000 zloty for this goal. This multilingual exhibition will accompany all the events devoted to Prof. Karski organized in Poland and abroad.
In 2008 in Ruda Śląska began the process of founding the Jan Karski International Institute for Dialogue and Tolerance. It was initiated by Kaya Mirecka-Ploss, friend of the Righteous.
The Institute will be opened in a few months. The authors of the exhibition want to enable Internet visits of the studio of Jan Karski, as the virtual exhibition is mainly addressed to young people.
In 1982 Jan Karski was awarded with the title of the Righteous Among the Nations, and in 1995 he was honored with the Order of the White Eagle. He was nominated to the Nobel Peace Prize. He died on July 13th, 2000 in Washington.
