The Righteous Among the Nations from the Zachodniopomorskie Province

On December 1st, 2010 at the Educational Center of the Institute of National Remembrance in Warsaw (21/25 Marszałkowska Street) at 5:00 pm will be held the first of a cycle of meetings presenting the work of the Szczecin Department of the Institute of National Remembrance.

The presentation is entitled “Let the Memories Speak. The Branch of KL Stutthof in Police and the »Righteous Among the Nations« in the publication of the Institute of National Remembrance in Szczecin”.

During the session inaugurating the cycle two books will be presented. The first – memoirs of Józef Jagodziński – is entitled „Bunkry na ruinach. Szkice do historii KL Stutthof – Außenlager Pölitz”(„Bunkers on ruins. Sketches to the history of KL Stutthof – Außenlager Pölitz”).

The second work is a publication entitled „»Jak ci się uda uratować, pamiętaj«. Relacje »Sprawiedliwych« i o »Sprawiedliwych« z województwa zachodniopomorskiego” („»If You Manage to Survive, Remember«. Accounts of the »Righteous« and about the »Righteous« from the Zachodniopomorskie Province”).

It presents 35 accounts of the Polish Righteous from the Zachodniopomorskie Province. The material was prepared by Paweł Knap.

The publication is based on applications for the title “Righteous Among the Nations” gathered in the archive of the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw, as well as on recordings of interviews conducted by the author of the publication between July 2009 and March 2010 with the decorated and their families.

Among other sources used to prepare this work are personal memoirs, private correspondence, notes on reverses of photos etc. The book was created as part of the project “Poles Rescuing Jews”.

The presentation will be accompanied by the vernissage of the exhibition “Deeds that Cannot be Repayed. Righteous from the Zachodniopomorskie Province”.

The exhibition consists of 17 display-boards presenting the history of the medal “Righteous Among the Nations” and the stories of over ten living Righteous from the Zachodniopomorskie Province.
