The 8th Irena Sendler Award for Teachers

, 16 November 2016
For the eighth time, the Centre for Civic Education will present the Irena Sendler Award. Teachers who may be nominated are those who teach in a spirit of tolerance. The winner will be selected, from amongst the nominees, by the Awards Committee.

The Irena Sendler “For Repairing the World” Award recognises teachers who:

·         teach in a spirit of tolerance and respect for others,

·         play an important role in their school and local community,

·         carry out specific projects and activities which engage children and young people,

·         display positive outcomes, beyond their school, as a result of their activities.

Award candidates can be nominated by third parties, institutions or organisation. Teachers may also nominate themselves. The Award winner will receive 15,000 zł. Several awards are presented each year.

The aim of the Award is to remember social activist Irena Sendler, a Righteous Among the Nations who, during World War II, saved over 2,000 Jewish children. The Award was established to support teachers whose activities, through their work with students or with their local community, are driven by the values close to Irena Sendler – tolerance, respect for others, a sense of responsibility for others and courage.

The Award was established in 2006 by the Children of the Holocaust Association. Its first recipiens, Robert Szuchta and Norman Conard from the USA, were personally selected by Irena Sendler. Previous winners include, among others, Anna Kloza, Marzanna Pogorzelska, Małgorzata Rusiłowicz and, last year, Marina Hulia. Outstanding promoter of culture, and previous Award winner, Bożena Szroeder has become an Award Ambassador.
