Dr Olga Linkiewicz is a culture anthropologist, assistant professor in the Historical Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. She collaborates with the Center for Urban History of East Central Europe in Lviv and the Foundation for German-Polish Cooperation. Among her academic interests are social history and historical anthropology. In her book „Pod polskim piłatem. Wiejskie społeczności lokalne w województwach południowo-wschodnich Drugiej Rzeczypospolitej” („Under the Polish Pilate. Local village communities in South-Eastern provinces of the Second Polish Republic”) the author focuses on the problems of ethnicity and of constructing a national consciousness in the borderland. Olga Linkiewicz is a collaborator of the project “Polish Righteous – Recalling Forgotten History”. She has prepared the workshops “Żoliborz – garden of the Righteous Among the Nations”.
The workshops “Żoliborz – garden of the Righteous Among the Nations” took place on July 10th and September 4th, 2010 as part of a project carried out by the program “Polish Righteous – Recalling Forgotten History” of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews. These meetings were devoted to the heroic conducts of those people, who during the Second World War decided to rescue Jews. The participants were discovering the Warsaw district of Żoliborz thanks to accounts, photos, maps, objects and places. That way a complex image of the district where so many people helped Jews appeared to them. The participants of the workshops also tried to jointly answer the question: why were so many inhabitants of Żoliborz willing to risk their own lives and the lives of their families to save others.
The program “Stay with us”, in which Olga Linkiewicz is one of the winners, has been carried out by the “Polityka” magazine for 10 years. During this time scholarships have been awarded to 196 winners – young Polish academics, “people with remarkable personalities and outstandingly creative minds”.
