Exhibition opening -”The Good Samaritans from Markowa. The Ulma family- the Poles murdered by Germans for helping Jews

On the occasion of the 66th anniversary of the crime committed on the Ulma family and the Jews from the Szall and Goldman families they were hiding, the Institute of National Remembrance, the Central Agricultural Library, The National Center for Culture and the Museum of History of the Polish Peasant Movement organised an exhibition entitled ”The Good Samaritans from Markowa. The Ulma family- the Poles murdered by Germans for helping Jews”.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition took place on Wednesday, 24th March at 1:00 p.m. in the Central Agricultural Library in Warsaw. The ceremony was attended among others by: The Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich, Ewa Rudnik from the Israeli Embassy, The Righteous’ representatives and the residents of Markowa.

Mateusz Szpytma, the Institute of National Remembrance historian, commented on the venture. Most of the photographs shown at the exhibition were taken by Józef Ulma. These are 20 large format posters which depict everyday life of the Ulmas and their neighbours.

After the official inauguration and the presentation of the exhibition in front of the library, the organizers invited the guests to a pre-release screening of “Świat Józefa” (Joseph’s World) by Rafał Wieczyński, a documentary film which tells the story of the Ulma family and the Polish- Jewish community in Markowa.

The exhibition was held within the framework of the social/educational action “Życie za Życie” (Life for life).
