Aleksandra Żaryn died

On 17th March Aleksandra Żaryn née Janowska, the Righteous Among the Nations, died. She was 94.

She graduated from the French Institute in Warsaw. She was a co-organizer of the academic weddings on Jasna Góra in May 1936.
During the World War II she was hiding Jews, Irena and Lazar Engelberg in her relatives’ property in Szeligi near Warsaw.

In 1945 she found a reading –room “Exlibris” on Piękna Street, an important meeting place for the old Warsaw intelligentsia; she also ran it for several years. She worked in various institutions, e.g. the National Museum and the Ministry of Arts and Culture. She translated academic works in history, architecture and artwork conservation into French.

Together with her husband, she was honoured with the Righteous Among the Nations medal in 1998.
